Manchester United considering David De Gea return

Manchester United considering David De Gea return

LONDON (ENGLAND) (ITALPRESS) – On his return as an opponent, in the friendly match on August 9th, he received a tribute from his old fans that left him impressed. And who knows, maybe the future holds more surprises. The connection between David De Gea, now at Fiorentina, and Manchester United is still strong. The 34-year-old goalkeeper played at Old Trafford from 2011 to 2023, making 545 appearances, which places him seventh in the club’s all-time appearances list. De Gea hasn’t ruled out the possibility of crossing his path with the Red Devils again in the future, and according to The Sun, United are seriously considering it.

Andre Onana unconvincing Ruben Amorim and the manager himself, ahead of the match against Arsenal, have not given any certainty about the former Inter goalkeeper’s starting position: “He’s like all the other players, everyone has to earn their place.” Over the summer, there have been numerous links for goalkeepers such as Emiliano Martinez, Gigio Donnarumma, and John Victor to United, but if a solution is indeed found for Onana, Manchester United could try to bring De Gea back to Old Trafford.

Maltese firefighters join Portugal wildfire battle

Maltese firefighters join Portugal wildfire battle

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Forty Civil Protection officers from Malta are taking part in Portugal’s fight against devastating wildfires, sparked by an intense heatwave, drought, and water shortages. This marks the fifth international mission Maltese firefighters have undertaken in just two years.

The first group of 20 officers departed Malta on Saturday, with the remaining contingent expected to join them shortly. In Portugal, nearly 4,000 personnel are engaged in tackling seven major fires. Authorities have extended a nationwide state of alert until Sunday, citing extreme temperatures and bone-dry conditions. Despite the deployment, Malta’s Civil Protection Department confirmed that resources at home remain sufficient to provide full service across Malta and Gozo.

In recent years, Maltese Civil Protection teams have also supported firefighting and emergency efforts in Greece, Turkey, and Libya. Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri credited ongoing government investment in equipment, training, and improved working conditions for enabling such international operations. “This transformation was made possible thanks to significant investment not only in equipment and training, but also in our firefighters themselves, who now enjoy the best conditions and salaries they have ever had,” Camilleri said.

Flights diverted to Palermo as violent storm batters Malta

Flights diverted to Palermo as violent storm batters Malta

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Two flights bound for Malta were diverted to Palermo on Saturday night after a violent storm swept across the islands, bringing heavy rain, hail, and widespread lightning. KM Malta Airlines flight KM103 from London and Ryanair’s FR8853, also from London, were both forced to land in Sicily due to the intense weather. Meanwhile, Ryanair’s FR1409 from Seville managed to touch down in Malta at 2:28am, nearly 100 minutes behind schedule. The storm also caused power outages in several localities.

By early Sunday, the national energy provider Enemalta was still working to restore electricity in the northern part of the island. Residents across Malta reported torrential rain and dramatic lightning strikes. Earlier on Saturday, an unexpected hailstorm pelted parts of the island, surprising many after months of hot, dry weather. The Meteorological Office issued a yellow warning for isolated thunderstorms and gusty rain, with the possibility of more hail showers throughout Sunday. Despite the unsettled weather, temperatures are forecast to climb to 30°C, with humidity pushing the “real feel” to 32°C. Authorities are urging caution as unstable conditions persist.

Howe stings Isak “Decide what you want to do”

BIRMINGHAM (ENGLAND) (ITALPRESS) – “Nothing has changed. The door remains open. It’s up to him to decide what he wants to do.” Eddie Howe, after the draw with Aston Villa, tries to take stock of Alexander Isak: the 25-year-old Swedish striker was absent today and continues to push for a transfer, with Liverpool interested. “We’d like to reach a solution, we need clarity, we don’t want any distractions,” Howe commented.

“But I’m not in control of the situation, there’s only one person who can control it. Let’s wait and see, my position is clear and I’m staying focused on the team.” Newcastle fans have taken issue with Isak. “They’ve been fantastic in supporting us, and if they want to say something, they’re free to do so,” Howe cut short.

Luis Enrique “We want the second Champions League in a row”

PARIS (FRANCE) (ITALPRESS) – “I want to continue making history. This is a special moment because few teams have managed to win the Champions League twice in a row, and we are very ambitious. We know how difficult it is to achieve this goal. It’s up to us.” PSG coach Luis Enrique said this in a press conference on the eve of their Ligue 1 debut against Nantes. “Our transfer market reflects our team,” he said regarding the summer transfer window.

“We don’t need many players. We have to be careful, but there’s no problem. We must remain calm and composed. The versatility of our players allows us to cover all positions,” added Luis Enrique.

Greek Bank’s takeover of HSBC Malta hailed as milestone deal

Greek Bank’s takeover of HSBC Malta hailed as milestone deal

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – A landmark agreement has been reached for Greece’s CrediaBank to acquire HSBC Malta, a move described by Greek Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis as “a milestone for Greece’s banking sector.”

The deal, announced on Friday, positions CrediaBank — formerly Attica Bank — as the preferred bidder, edging HSBC closer to its planned exit from Malta as part of a broader strategy to retreat from smaller markets and refocus on Asia.

Pierrakakis welcomed the agreement, calling it proof of the resilience and outward vision of Greece’s financial system. He also highlighted its significance within the European Banking Union, which he said fosters cross-border investment, healthy consolidation, and the rise of more competitive banks.

“This transaction strengthens the bonds between Greece and Malta, deepening bilateral relations and contributing to closer cooperation across Southern Europe and the Mediterranean,” Pierrakakis said.

Malta’s Finance Minister Clyde Caruana also praised the deal, describing it as a “significant development” that will bolster competition in Malta’s banking sector and reinforce its integration within the European market. He stressed that the buyer’s membership in the Eurosystem, together with the Greek government’s minority stake, underlined the bank’s credibility.

While both sides hailed the agreement, the process remains subject to regulatory approval. Advisors are now expected to negotiate finer details before the takeover can be finalized, a process that could take several months.

CrediaBank only recently rebranded from Attica Bank and is expected to complete its transition to the new identity by October. The deal marks one of the most significant cross-border banking moves in Malta in recent years, with stakeholders predicting long-term benefits for customers, employees, and the wider economy.
