Gozo launches Europe’s first solar flower energy hub

Gozo launches Europe’s first solar flower energy hub

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Fifteen innovative solar flowers have been installed at the Gozo Multi-Modal Hub in Ta’ Xħajma, marking the first such project in Europe. The installation was announced by Gozo and Planning Minister Clint Camilleri and Parliamentary Secretary for Public Works Omar Farrugia.

According to a government statement, each solar flower can produce up to 40% more energy than traditional solar panels, ensuring maximum efficiency.

Minister Camilleri said the hub represents another step toward Gozo’s 2050 environmental vision. “This energy will power electric buses linking Imġarr port with the Park & Ride facility. With this installation, we’re showing that Gozo can lead in sustainable innovation,” he said.

Parliamentary Secretary Farrugia noted that the project places Malta and Gozo on the global map as models for renewable energy and sustainability.

The €850,000 project, implemented in collaboration with Eco-Gozo and the Public Works Department, integrates clean energy with sustainable transport, aiming to reduce emissions and operational costs while promoting a self-sufficient, circular transport system.

Malta revokes citizenship of Russian jailed for money laundering

Malta revokes citizenship of Russian jailed for money laundering

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – The Maltese government has revoked the citizenship of 24-year-old Russian national Semen Kuksov, who is serving a prison sentence in the United Kingdom for running what authorities called a “professional banking service for criminals worldwide.”

The decision was announced in the latest edition of the Government Gazette, confirming the removal of Kuksov’s citizenship, which he obtained in 2022 under Malta’s controversial cash-for-passports programme.

Kuksov’s name appeared on the 2022 list of new citizens alongside his father, Vladimir Kuksov, after both acquired Maltese passports through the state-run citizenship-by-investment scheme.

Semen Kuksov later became a target of the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) under Operation Destabilise, an investigation that dismantled a global money-laundering network linked to Russian organised crime, ransomware operations, and drug trafficking.

The NCA said Kuksov admitted to running an underground cryptocurrency exchange that moved millions of euros for criminal groups. In just 74 days, he and an associate laundered more than €14 million using cash “tokens” to conceal transactions.

Kuksov was sentenced to five years and seven months in prison earlier this year. His father has not been implicated and retains his Maltese citizenship, publicly distancing himself from his son’s activities.

The format of the European Championship and World Cup qualifiers could change

The format of the European Championship and World Cup qualifiers could change

BERLIN (GERMANY) (ITALPRESS) – “L’Equipe” already reported on the issue last week, and now “Sport Bild” is also reiterating the same sentiment: the format of the European Championship and World Cup qualifiers could change.

UEFA is currently discussing ways to make a phase that has struggled to gain audiences more attractive, especially given the centralization of TV rights starting in 2028. The idea is to adopt the format that’s already proving successful in European competitions, with a league phase before the knockout stages.

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin himself, at a recent event in Portugal, made it clear that the 24-team European Championship format would remain unchanged, but that “the qualifiers could look different. There will be no more matches, but a more interesting format. We’re considering it.”

The same goes for the European World Cup qualifiers. In Nyon, the UEFA National Team Competitions Committee has reportedly already established a working group tasked with presenting reform proposals to the Executive Committee on December 3.

These proposals will, however, ensure that the qualification opportunity for national teams from smaller associations will always be guaranteed. Last week, “L’Equipe” suggested the Nations League as a qualifying route, or, similar to the Champions League, a single championship of 54 teams or two groups of 27.

La Liga, Villarreal vs. Barcellona will not be played in Miami. Tebas “A missed opportunity”

La Liga, Villarreal vs. Barcellona will not be played in Miami. Tebas “A missed opportunity”

MADRID (SPAIN) (ITALPRESS) – In the end, LaLiga was forced to backtrack: the “Miami plan” is officially off the table. Last night, the Spanish league had to acknowledge too much opposition, announcing that the Villarreal vs. Barcelona match will no longer take place on December 20 at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium. It would have been the first-ever LaLiga match played outside Spain. The league’s U-turn was mainly driven by protests from players and clubs alike.

The Spanish players’ union, AFE, repeatedly criticized the lack of transparency in a decision made without properly consulting players, and which allegedly violated the collective bargaining agreement. Although UEFA had reluctantly given its approval, the backlash intensified—particularly because LaLiga and the Spanish Football Federation ignored AFE’s request for a meeting.

Things escalated further on October 13, when LaLiga president Javier Tebas questioned the union’s stance by stating, “I’m not so sure AFE really wants to stop this project.” With no date set for a meeting between the parties, tensions boiled over, culminating in a protest during last weekend’s matches, where players paused play for the first 10–15 seconds.

But the Miami plan was also undermined by other obstacles. Both CONCACAF and the U.S. Soccer Federation were ready to oppose the match, having not been consulted. Real Madrid led the charge among disgruntled clubs, filing a formal complaint with Spain’s Higher Sports Council, arguing that holding Villarreal-Barça in the U.S. would compromise the fairness of the competition.

There were also political pressures: Spain’s Minister of Sport, Pilar Alegría, stated her preference that domestic competitions be played within Spain. With so many forces aligned against it, the American dream collapsed—much to the dismay of Tebas, who took to social media with a post titled “A lost opportunity for Spanish football.”

Tebas blamed “the institutions that govern European football,” accusing them of “destroying national leagues year after year—the true engine of the football industry in Europe.” He also took a thinly veiled swipe at Real Madrid, criticizing those who “appeal to the integrity of the competition” while “undermining that same integrity by pressuring referees and officials, crafting misleading narratives, or using political and media pressure as a sporting weapon.”

“Spanish football must look to the future with ambition, not fear,” Tebas concluded. He also had to reckon with the pullback of Relevent Sports, the U.S.-based promoter of the Miami event, which notified LaLiga of the “need to postpone the match.”

“Given the current uncertainty in Spain, there is not enough time to properly organize an event of this magnitude,” read a statement published by The Athletic. “It would also be irresponsible to begin selling tickets without official confirmation.”

It’s a painful defeat for LaLiga, as the project was seen as “a historic and unprecedented opportunity to internationalize Spanish football.” The two clubs involved also expressed disappointment. Villarreal coach Marcelino called the timing of LaLiga’s backtrack—announced while the team was playing Manchester City in the Champions League—“disrespectful.” Barcelona, meanwhile, lamented “the missed opportunity to promote the competition’s image in a strategic market with strong growth potential and revenue generation to benefit all clubs.”

Manchester United interested in Lewandowski on a free transfer

Manchester United interested in Lewandowski on a free transfer

MANCHESTER (ENGLAND) (ITALPRESS) – Most likely, at the end of the season, Robert Lewandowski will leave Barcelona. The 37-year-old Polish striker’s contract is set to expire, and according to Catalan media, the club does not intend to offer him a renewal. However, the doors of Old Trafford could open for Lewandowski.

Despite having invested heavily in attacking options last summer — including Cunha, Mbeumo, and Šeško — Manchester United would not want to miss the opportunity to sign the Polish goal-scorer on a free transfer, even if he’s no longer in his prime. According to the Daily Star, Lewandowski would welcome a final dance in the Premier League, as he has never hidden his desire to experience English football.

Xabi Alonso “Real-Juventus is a European ‘Clasico’”

Xabi Alonso “Real-Juventus is a European ‘Clasico’”

MADRID (SPAIN) (ITALPRESS) – “It’s a European Clasico.” That’s how Xabi Alonso describes Real Madrid vs. Juventus, the match valid for the third round of the Champions League. And indeed, it’s a clash that has written pages of European football history, delivering goals, emotions, but also tension and controversy.

“We’re talking about a match between two clubs that have faced each other many times – I’ve played in some of those matches myself,” recalled the Spanish coach during the press conference. “We’re coming into this very well prepared. We want to get our third win out of three in the Champions League, and to do that, we need to start on the right foot. The support of the Bernabeu will also be essential, and I know it’ll be there, because people are eager to witness big matches, and it’s up to us to give them the emotions they’re looking for.”

Xabi Alonso is fully aware that Juventus are coming off a defeat to Como, coached by his former national teammate, Cesc Fabregas. “Como played a great match, very well prepared by Fabregas. But we’re expecting a different Juve – a team we know well,” said Xabi Alonso, who also praised Nico Paz: “He made a very smart decision last year; now is not the time to think about the future.”

He then turned his focus back to tomorrow’s match. “We have to be very careful with this match against Juventus. We know that any team can be dangerous, and history tells us that as well. Juve is a great team — they are today and they have been in the past. They have many excellent players, and Yildiz is one of them. I know him, and I’ve seen how impressively he has grown. He was at Bayern Munich when I was there, and seeing his progress makes me happy,” Xabi Alonso explained.

“Beyond individual players, Juventus is a very strong team tactically. They are capable of breaking the balance of opposing sides. We will need to manage possession well and play the type of match we want to play.”

Xabi Alonso, who will be without Huijsen, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Carvajal, also responded to a question about a historical encounter — the 2017 Champions League final in Cardiff, where Zidane’s Real beat Juventus 4–1.

“Zizou surely remembers it more clearly than I do, but I remember that Real dominated from start to finish and played an extraordinary match. I have great respect for Zidane,” said Xabi Alonso.

Boat capsized in Maltese SAR waters, migrants’ bodies recovered

Boat capsized in Maltese SAR waters, migrants’ bodies recovered

ROME (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Following a request for cooperation from the Maltese SAR Authority, the Italian Coast Guard vessel Dattilo – CP940 has completed operations to recover bodies at sea. Seven bodies were recovered in total — belonging to one man, five women, and one minor.

The operations were coordinated by the Maltese Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, after an Italian Coast Guard aircraft reported during the night between October 16 and 17 a capsized boat with migrants clinging to the hull. Initial rescue efforts involved a passing merchant ship and an Italian Coast Guard patrol boat, which rescued 11 people and recovered one body.

Search operations were also carried out by Maltese aircraft, the European Agency Frontex, and the Italian Guardia di Finanza. Despite continuous monitoring of the wreck by Coast Guard vessels and divers, the recovery operations took several days due to particularly adverse weather and sea conditions, which repeatedly forced the suspension of activities to ensure the safety of personnel involved.

Malta’s inflation drops below EU average as Europe’s rates climb

Malta’s inflation drops below EU average as Europe’s rates climb

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Malta’s annual inflation rate declined in September, contrasting with an upward trend across the European Union, according to data from Eurostat and the National Statistics Office.

Figures compiled through the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) show Malta’s inflation stood at 2.4%, down from 2.7% in August. Across the EU, inflation increased from 2.4% to 2.6%, while the euro area average rose from 2% to 2.2%.

This means Malta’s rate now sits below the EU average but remains slightly above the euro area mean.

The highest inflation levels were recorded in Romania (8.6%), Estonia (5.3%), and Croatia and Slovakia (4.6%), while Cyprus (0%), France (1.1%), and Italy and Greece (1.8%) registered the lowest.

Inflation fell in eight member states, including Malta, was stable in four, and rose in fifteen.

The NSO said the main upward pressures came from restaurants and hotels (0.66 percentage points), followed by food and non-alcoholic beverages (0.61pp), and miscellaneous goods and services (0.28pp).

The HICP tracks consumer prices across 12 categories but notably excludes owner-occupied housing, a sector that has seen sharp price rises in Malta.

Malta, PM Abela urges stronger EU competitiveness and energy security at MED9 Summit

Malta, PM Abela urges stronger EU competitiveness and energy security at MED9 Summit

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Prime Minister Robert Abela participated in the MED9 summit in Portorož, Slovenia — the first to be held under the Slovenian Presidency. The summit brought together leaders from nine Mediterranean EU member states to discuss Europe’s economic competitiveness, energy and climate policy, and developments in the Middle East, particularly the situation in Gaza.

During a joint press conference, Prime Minister Abela stressed Malta’s commitment to pushing the European Union to strengthen competitiveness within the single market while safeguarding security of supply and citizens’ economic interests.

He highlighted Malta’s unique challenges as an island nation heavily dependent on imports, noting that the country remains unconnected to the European gas grid. Abela reaffirmed his intention to continue advocating for better energy connectivity and supply security for Malta and Gozo.

Abela pointed to Malta’s success in stabilising energy prices through subsidies as an example of balancing ecological transition with the protection of families and businesses.

He also called for climate policies that do not place excessive burdens on citizens and businesses, particularly in island states.

Abela said he will raise these issues at the upcoming European Council meeting in Brussels, where he will advocate for stronger protection of European industries and the competitiveness of the single market.

The MED9 summit, now in its 12th edition, also featured European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and King Abdallah II of Jordan, who addressed the leaders on the need for peace and stability in the Middle East.
