Gozitan businessman eyes Italian club takeover, keeps Sampdoria on wishlist

Gozitan businessman eyes Italian club takeover, keeps Sampdoria on wishlist

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Gozitan businessman and Ħamrun Spartans president Joseph Portelli has reiterated his ambition to acquire an Italian football club, describing Sampdoria as a “dream” purchase but confirming he is pursuing other opportunities.

Speaking to the Times of Malta, Portelli said he would be ready to take over Sampdoria if the club’s financial woes led to administration. “If Sampdoria goes bankrupt, I would not even blink twice about taking over, even if they start from Serie D,” he said.

The Maltese entrepreneur first announced his plans to buy an Italian side in September, sparking speculation amid the financial struggles of several clubs. Sampdoria, currently battling to stay in Serie B, face debts estimated between €30–€40 million, with half due immediately if sold before 2033.

Portelli said he is also exploring other options in Serie B, C, or even D. “You can buy a Serie D club cheaply and invest around €2 million to take it into the professional leagues,” he explained.

His broader aim remains to strengthen Ħamrun Spartans and Maltese football. “Any profit from the Italian club will go back to Ħamrun. The goal is to reach the League Phase of a UEFA competition every year,” he said.

Portelli added that owning an Italian side could also boost player development and training opportunities for his Maltese club.

Real Madrid, Xabi Alonso “El Clasico is a special match, i’m focused on Barca, not on the controversies”

Real Madrid, Xabi Alonso “El Clasico is a special match, i’m focused on Barca, not on the controversies”

MADRID (SPAIN) – Xabi Alonso knows exactly what El Clásico means — what it’s like to win it, to lose it, and all the tension and talk that come before the game. He may be a young coach, but with plenty of experience, and as a player, he has seen it all. Now, he faces his first Clásico as Real Madrid’s head coach, and as usual, tomorrow’s match at the Santiago Bernabéu carries huge weight — both for the rivalry and for the league standings.

“Obviously, we’re talking about El Clásico — it’s always a special game, no matter what. It’s the first one of this new project, and we need to play it with the energy our fans will give us, hoping to celebrate with them after the final whistle,” said Alonso.

The controversies haven’t been missing — but that, too, is part of the Clásico. The comments made by Lamine Yamal (“They steal, but they’re always complaining”) didn’t go unnoticed. Alonso tried to sidestep the topic, but the questions kept coming. “Do those words serve as extra motivation? No. As I’ve already said, this match is so important, with so many elements involved, that motivation is already sky-high.” “I don’t want to get into other topics,” Alonso added. “There are many statements coming from Barcelona, and I can’t analyze everything. What matters is the pitch and focusing on how to play.”

Some believe Yamal’s comments could even cause tension within the Spanish national team. “More questions about that? I’m only thinking about the match ahead — it will be intense and hard-fought. I’m not thinking about anything else.”

So, full focus on Barça? “Yes, but I’m feeling good going into this one. I’m aware of its importance, though it doesn’t really change our daily work. The lineup? I already have it in mind, but I won’t reveal it here. We’ve recovered almost everyone who was unavailable for the Juventus match.”

If Barça will rely on Yamal, Real can respond with Vinícius and Mbappé. “He’s in good shape and motivated like the rest of the team. Kylian is a key player for us. I think we’re going into this Clásico in a good moment — both in terms of spirit and style. We’ve fixed a few things after the derby defeat.”

That 5–2 loss away to Atlético certainly made noise. “I understand — it’s an important match — but what matters to me is valuing the progress of our growth. I’ve seen improvement. Tomorrow’s game is another major step, but there are no trophies or medals to win yet. It’s just another stage, like the derby was.”

People often say Barça excels through their style of play, while Real is more pragmatic. “I like how my team plays, and I believe we can keep improving. We have a solid foundation and must continue taking steps forward. In my opinion, Real already plays good football. We won’t change our style just because we’re facing Barça.”

Flick will miss Real Madrid-Barcellona, his assistant Sorg: “It’s an honor to be on the bench”

Flick will miss Real Madrid-Barcellona, his assistant Sorg: “It’s an honor to be on the bench”

BARCELONA (SPAIN) (ITALPRESS) – Key players are missing (Raphinha above all), and Hansi Flick will not be available either. Or rather, he won’t be on the bench because he’ll have to serve his suspension, and assistant Marcus Sorg will lead Barcelona to the “Clasic” at the Bernabeu.

The German coach has decided to step back starting today, sending his assistant coach to a press conference. “It’s an honor to be on the bench tomorrow; it’s a special occasion. We’re expecting a very difficult match. We need to play to our strengths, like high pressing, and show what we can do. It’s clear that we’ll miss Hansi,”

Sorg emphasizes. “He’s the most important part of the team. He’s a liability for us; the players trust him, and he makes them feel safe from the bench. But just like when someone key is missing, we just need to focus on giving 100% and managing this situation as best we can. His week was like any other, always motivated and in a good mood. And that’s what we need before the Clásico.”

Marseille, De Zerbi “Lisbon defeat? I didn’t make myself understood”

Marseille, De Zerbi “Lisbon defeat? I didn’t make myself understood”

MARSEILLE (FRANCE) (ITALPRESS) – “We didn’t do what I wanted, I expected us to be higher up the pitch. I didn’t make myself understood at halftime, I didn’t want a team so low, unfortunately, that’s how it went.” Roberto De Zerbi, on the eve of the match against Lens, in which Marseille are called upon to defend first place in the league, takes a moment to acquit himself for the Champions League defeat in Lisbon, where his team, having taken the lead, were left tened by a mistake by Emerson Palmieri and let the score come back. “But Olympiacos played with ten men against Barça and conceded six goals. Napoli against PSV, another six. Ajax conceded five. We were down to ten men and lost 2-1,” the Italian coach emphasized, responding to those who criticized his decisions, which he deemed too resigned. “I’ve heard false things”.

Marcus Rashford “I want to stay at Barcelona”

Marcus Rashford “I want to stay at Barcelona”

BARCELONA (SPAIN) (ITALPRESS) – “Do I want to stay? Definitely.” Marcus Rashford, speaking to ESPN, confirmed that he has found the ideal environment in Barcelona to relaunch his career. The 27-year-old English striker arrived last summer on loan from Manchester United with an option to buy for €32 million. Although still tied to the Red Devils until 2028, there is no future for him at Old Trafford, which is why staying at Blaugrana is his first option.

“I enjoy myself here, and I think that’s true for anyone who loves football. Barcelona is a key club in the history of the game, and as a player, it’s an honor to be here,” said Rashford, who has already scored five goals in 12 games. “People forget this, but I spent 23 years of my life at Manchester United, so sometimes you just need a change, and I think that’s the case for me.”

Lamine Yamal fires up the El Clasico “Real Madrid steal and then complain”

Lamine Yamal fires up the El Clasico “Real Madrid steal and then complain”

MADRID (SPAIN) (ITALPRESS) – Lamine Yamal has set the stage ablaze ahead of El Clásico. “They steal, they complain, they do things I don’t even understand…,” said the Barcelona star, taking a jab at Real Madrid during a casual chat with Gerard Piqué and streamer Ibai Llanos.

The harsh words didn’t exactly surprise the Merengues, who, according to Marca, are growing increasingly tired of the young blaugrana’s off-field behavior — seen in Valdebebas as arrogant and even hypocritical, given the ongoing Negreira case involving Barcelona’s alleged payments to the former vice president of the Spanish referees’ committee over two decades.

Yamal’s accusations have only fueled Real Madrid’s motivation ahead of Sunday’s clash. The squad had already circled the date in red after suffering four defeats to the Catalans last season. His comments, while causing some unease within the dressing room, have ultimately become extra fuel for a team determined to reclaim the top spot in La Liga this weekend.
