Malta abolishes Golden Passport Scheme

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Malta will officially scrap its controversial golden passport scheme, replacing it with a revised system based on exceptional merit and contributions. The move follows a ruling by the European Court of Justice (ECJ), which found the previous citizenship-by-investment model breached EU law by commercialising nationality.
Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri announced the changes on Wednesday, confirming that all transactional elements of naturalisation will be removed. This aims to align Malta’s citizenship laws with EU expectations and address long-standing legal concerns.
