Lewandowski warns Barcelona: “I don’t know if this will be my last year here”

BARCELONA (ITALPRESS) – “I don’t know if it will be the last year of my contract. I’m calm. What matters now is not what will happen in the end, but what will happen this season and what I will be able to do.” Barcelona center forward Robert Lewandowski told the Spanish media during his training camp in Japan, regarding his contract expiring in June 2026. On the arrival of Marcus Rashford: “He’s an enormously talented player. I remember we played against Manchester United and he was in great form. He can help us and can play in different positions. There are many matches and his arrival is necessary,” he added. Tomorrow (at 12 noon Italian time), Barcelona will face Vissel Kobe in a friendly.

Messi disappointed to be suspended after missing MLS All-Star Game

Messi disappointed to be suspended after missing MLS All-Star Game

MIAMI (UNITED STATES) (ITALPRESS) – Lionel Messi is “extremely disappointed” after he, like his Inter Miami teammate, Jordi Alba, was suspended for one match for not participating in the Major League Soccer All-Star Game, for which he had been called up. The two former Barcelona players missed Wednesday’s match in Austin, Texas, and, by regulation, will have to serve one-match suspensions in today’s match against FC Cincinnati.

This sanction took the Argentine by surprise. “Leo is very displeased, extremely displeased, as expected,” said Jorge Mas, one of the owners of Inter Miami. “I hope it doesn’t have a long-term impact. Will it have an initial impact on the players’ perception of how the league rules work? Absolutely, yes, there’s no doubt about it.” Alba and Messi’s reaction “was exactly what you’d expect from two competitive players who don’t understand the decision, who don’t understand how missing a friendly match can directly lead to a suspension. The rule is what it is, but they don’t understand it.”

MLS Commissioner Don Garber called Messi’s suspension a “very difficult decision. I know Lionel loves this league. I don’t think there’s a player—or anyone for that matter—who has done more for MLS than Messi. Unfortunately, we have a long-standing rule regarding All-Star Game participation, and we had to enforce it.”

Malta, government debt nears €11 Billion as deficit widens in June

Malta, government debt nears €11 Billion as deficit widens in June

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Government debt stood at €10.9 billion at the end of June, marking an increase of over €1 billion compared to the same month last year, according to newly released figures by the National Statistics Office (NSO). The figures also show that the government’s Consolidated Fund recorded a deficit of €457 million. The fund, which operates like the government’s central bank account, gathers tax revenue and finances general government spending.

While recurrent revenue rose by €69.6 million year-on-year, total government expenditure saw a much sharper rise of €437.2 million. This mismatch led to a negative change in the Consolidated Fund balance of €367.6 million. The largest increase in revenue came from social security payments, which totalled €80.7 million. On the expenditure side, the most significant rise was in the “Programmes and Initiatives” category, which increased by €169.3 million. The latest data highlights growing fiscal pressures amid rising government spending, despite steady revenue growth.

Messi and Jordi Alba suspended for one match for missing MLS All-Star

NEW YORK (USA) (ITALPRESS) – It was expected, and it’s here. Major League Soccer, applying its regulations, has handed one-match suspensions to Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba, both Inter Miami players, for missing last Wednesday’s match between the MLS All-Star team and the Mexican Liga MX team (a 3-1 victory for the Americans).

The two will therefore miss the league match against FC Cincinnati. The regulations include a provision designed to encourage player participation in the event, establishing that, barring injury, players called up must participate in the All-Star Game or be required to miss their team’s next match.

Manchester City are preparing to bring James Trafford

Manchester City are preparing to bring James Trafford

MANCHESTER (ENGLAND) (ITALPRESS) – Manchester City are preparing to bring James Trafford, the 23-year-old England goalkeeper and Under-21 international, back to the Etihad. Sold to Burnley in the summer of 2023 for £19 million, Trafford was instrumental in the Clarets’ return to the Premier League last season, keeping 29 clean sheets in 45 games.

At the time, City had secured a buyback option, with the option to match any offers that came in for the goalkeeper, and so it happened: after Newcastle offered £27 million (approximately €31 million), the Citizens followed suit, and Trafford preferred the offer from Manchester over that of the Magpies. The 22-year-old English goalkeeper, ready to sign a five-year contract and compete with Ederson for a starting spot, would be Guardiola’s sixth summer signing after Reijnders, Cherki, Nypan, Ait-Nouri, and Bettinelli.

Botafogo interested in Taremi, while Inter are awaiting an offer

RIO DE JANEIRO (BRAZIL) (ITALPRESS) – Not in Chivu’s plans, Mehdi Taremi could leave Inter after just one season, destining for Brazil. According to “Globoesporte,” Botafogo is reportedly in talks with the Nerazzurri to acquire the 33-year-old Iranian striker: after an initial survey, the Brazilian club has reportedly made an initial offer to the player, offering a contract until December 2027. Taremi, for now, would prefer to stay in Europe, where there has been contact with Besiktas, but the Cariocas are hoping to convince him by offering him a leading role in Davide Ancelotti’s team and a decent salary, even if lower than what he earns at Inter.

Flamengo awaits Emerson Royal, medical checks soon

RIO DE JANEIRO (BRAZIL) (ITALPRESS) – Flamengo awaits Emerson Royal and is preparing to release Wesley for Roma. According to “Globoesporte,” an agreement has been reached with AC Milan for the 26-year-old Brazilian right-back, who is expected to arrive in Rio de Janeiro tomorrow to undergo a medical and sign a contract.

The deal is expected to be a loan with an option to buy for €9 million, having narrowly beaten off competition from Besiktas, with the player’s desire to return to his homeland proving decisive. At this point, there should be no more obstacles to Wesley’s transfer to the Giallorossi: the parties have already reached an agreement for a few days (€25 million plus €5 million in bonuses), and Flamengo was just waiting to find a replacement.

Supe League, Laporta “Dialogue with UEFA is open”

Supe League, Laporta “Dialogue with UEFA is open”

BARCELONA (SPAIN) (ITALPRESS) – “I have always tried to play a mediating role. Now we are in a situation where the Super League is in dialogue with UEFA. Aleksander Ceferin has appointed some UEFA officials to speak with Super League representatives, including CEO Bernd Reichart. We are reaching a principle of agreement, divided into three blocks, and the one with the greatest coordination is the one related to the technological platform.”

Joan Laporta, president of Barcelona, in an interview with “Mundo Deportivo” said that about the Super League project—where only the Blaugrana and Real Madrid remain—is more alive than ever; indeed, there is even an opening from Nyon.

“I think it’s good news, and there’s good will on both sides. Barça is in favor of dialogue, and within the Super League we’re pushing for an agreement. I believe that, for the good of football, it’s positive that an agreement is reached as soon as possible. There’s a ruling from the Court of Justice of the European Union that endorses the Super League’s position. I think this is important, but even more important is that the football world remains united. Now I see a great deal of openness from the UEFA president. We’re working on what we wanted from the beginning: not a conflict, but an improvement of European football. There’s room for a shared agreement.”
