Malta, government launches new road code amid spate of fatal crashes

Malta, government launches new road code amid spate of fatal crashes

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – The Maltese government has launched a revamped Road Code aimed at improving safety and awareness on the nation’s roads, as the country grapples with the aftermath of three fatal accidents that occurred within less than 24 hours.

Unveiled by Minister for Transport Chris Bonett, the new Maltese Road Code is a comprehensive update reflecting the changing realities of mobility in Malta. It includes clearer guidance for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and users of modern transport like electric scooters and pedelecs.

The code places strong emphasis on discipline and the dangers of distractions, particularly mobile phone use while driving. “It is not uncommon for someone to end up killed or bedridden because a driver failed to think twice,” Bonett said during the launch.

As part of the initiative, the government introduced the “Think Twice” campaign, which aims to raise awareness about everyday decisions that can have life-altering consequences on the road. An additional campaign targeting children will complement this effort, promoting long-term cultural change in road use behavior.

Transport Malta CEO Kurt Farrugia said the updated guidelines are necessary to address new challenges and ensure respect among all road users. The code also includes specific safety rules for wearing helmets and seat belts, accident reporting, and navigating traffic signs.

The announcement coincided with a grim weekend on Malta’s roads, with three separate accidents claiming three lives and leaving several others seriously injured. While investigations are ongoing, the incidents have added urgency to the government’s push for safer roads.

Minister Bonett concluded by stating that regardless of how transport evolves, “the value of life and the sense of safety must remain unchanged.”

Malta ranked 9th most overcrowded tourist spot globally

Malta ranked 9th most overcrowded tourist spot globally

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Malta has been ranked as the ninth most overcrowded tourist destination in the world, according to a study by Go2Africa, as reported by the New York Post. The list highlights global hotspots where overtourism is placing increasing strain on infrastructure and local communities. The study compared each country’s annual tourist numbers with its population.

In 2024, Malta, with a population of 563,443, welcomed over 3.5 million tourists — averaging 6.32 visitors per resident. Only eight countries surpassed Malta, including Vatican City, which saw 6.8 million tourists despite having just 882 residents. Other nations ahead of Malta included Monaco, Bahrain, and the Bahamas.

The New York Post noted the broader implications of such tourism levels, stating that “picturesque destinations are feeling the strain of overtourism,” and raised concerns about sustainability and the long-term impact on communities. The report suggested tourists consider alternative destinations to ease pressure on overcrowded locales. For Malta, Mauritius was recommended as a quieter, more spacious option with similar cultural richness. Other countries that followed Malta in the top 15 included Hong Kong, Iceland, and Croatia.

Joao Felix will not return to Benfica, close to joining Al Nassr

Joao Felix will not return to Benfica, close to joining Al Nassr

LONDON (ENGLAND) (ITALPRESS) – Benfica had been working on the return of Joao Felix for some time, dreaming of reviving a talent that, after leaving Da Luz, fell by the wayside. Instead, the 25-year-old Portuguese striker will most likely end up in Saudi Arabia: according to English media, his transfer to Al Nassr is nearing completion, where he will reunite with compatriots Jorge Jesus and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Chelsea will earn 50 million euros, which will help them launch their bid for RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons. Joao Felix, who was on loan at Milan in the second half of last season, was acquired last summer from Atletico Madrid for more or less the same fee the Blues will receive today, where the Portuguese had already played for a few months in 2023.

PARIS (FRANCE) (ITALPRESS) – Among the key figures in Paris Saint-Germain‘s treble-winning campaign, Gigio Donnarumma could surprisingly leave France. The 26-year-old Italian goalkeeper’s contract expires in a year, and negotiations for a renewal are stalling (the club reportedly offered him a salary with a variable component tied to his appearances).

As “L’Equipe” reports, PSG is close to closing a deal for Lucas Chevalier, a 23-year-old French goalkeeper from Lille. The negotiations between the two clubs are reportedly now in the final stages (a deal worth 40 million euros), with Donnarumma potentially ending his Parisian experience early. Manchester United and City are also reportedly keeping an eye on the situation: both City and United have reportedly been monitoring the situation for several weeks, waiting for the right moment to make a move.
