Malta-registered aircraft issues emergency signal, lands in Nuremberg

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – A Malta-registered Corendon Airlines plane issued an emergency signal today while flying over Croatia. The aircraft was subsequently directed to land in Nuremberg, Germany. Maltese Transport Minister Chris Bonett announced the incident, stating that the plane continued along its planned route and landed safely in Nuremberg at approximately 10:16 AM. “Investigations suggest the signal was transmitted due to a malfunction in the radio communication system,” Bonett said. The Boeing 737 was operating a scheduled flight from the Greek island of Corfu to Nuremberg, Germany, when the signal was sent. The Maltese minister added that neither the passengers nor the crew were ever in danger.
According to international media reports, the incident occurred amidst concerns raised earlier that morning regarding the possible sighting of a drone near Nuremberg Airport. Three pilots reportedly stated, independently of one another, that they had spotted an object resembling a drone during takeoff or landing operations at the airport. Airport authorities, border police, and German air traffic control immediately launched a search, supported by a police helicopter; however, no drone was found. Finally, Croatian media reported that a Croatian Rafale fighter jet intercepted the aircraft when the signal was issued and escorted it out of Croatian airspace.
