Malta, beekeepers call for action against the Asian hornet

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Maltese beekeepers are calling for state intervention to locate and monitor colonies of the Asian hornet, whose unprecedented presence is threatening bee populations across the island. Industry professionals are urging authorities to coordinate a structured and sustained response, warning that the consequences of the infestation could extend beyond their specific sector, potentially jeopardizing Malta’s food security and agricultural production. The severity of the situation is highlighted by the destruction of 30 hives at an apiary in Birzebbuga, resulting in estimated losses of around €30,000. According to the beekeepers, locating and monitoring the colonies requires a coordinated effort involving Civil Protection personnel, the armed forces, and industry representatives. They point to the Italian experience as a potential model, noting that Civil Protection authorities there have been equipped to intervene in specific cases.
