Ceferin will run again for the UEFA presidency

NYON (SWITZERLAND) (ITALPRESS) – Aleksander Ceferin has reversed his decision and will run again for the UEFA presidency. The announcement was made in Berlin by the 58-year-old Slovenian official himself, who has been at the helm since 2016, to the presidents and general secretaries of all 55 affiliated federations. In recent months, they had unanimously urged him to reconsider his previous decision.

Ceferin will therefore stand for re-election at the next Ordinary Congress, which will be held in Astana, Kazakhstan, on April 22, 2027.

According to UEFA headquarters in Nyon, the decision came “following expressions of support and encouragement received from other representatives of European football.”

“I want to thank the national associations for their trust,” Ceferin said. In February 2024, he had announced that he would step down as president at the end of his term, despite Congress having approved amendments to the Statutes allowing him to stand for another four-year term through 2031.

“We have faced extraordinary challenges in recent years and we have faced them as one team. There is still important work to be done, and I have therefore accepted their request. My ambition remains the same: to keep European football united, to make our sport stronger and to leave UEFA ready for the next generation. I am also deeply grateful to my family. This decision requires a great deal from them as well, and I could not have made it without their understanding and support.”
