Malta debt rises despite strong early-year budget surplus

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Malta’s central government debt climbed to €11.44 billion by the end of February 2026, up €509.3 million from a year earlier, even as public finances posted a sharp surplus in the opening months of the year. Figures released by the National Statistics Office show the government’s Consolidated Fund recorded a surplus of €229.6 million in January and February, reversing a €95.1 million deficit in the same period of 2025. The turnaround was driven by stronger tax revenues, particularly income tax and VAT.
