Messi sees Club World Cup “Big teams on the pitch, I can’t wait”

MIAMI (UNITED STATES) (ITALPRESS) – He will be the one to open the dance. And that’s no small thing. Lionel Messi is one of the greatest in history and despite his 37 years and a career studded with trophies he has won, he is enthusiastically living the Club World Cup that his Inter Miami will open, playing the opening match against Al Ahly at the Hard Rock Stadium.

“It’s an interesting competition. Having the chance to be part of it is exciting,” Messi told Fifa. “My expectations are different from those I had when I played for other teams, but I’m impatient and I can’t wait to compete against the best teams and do well,” explained the former Barcelona player who conquered Major League Soccer after moving to Inter Miami in 2023. He led the Herons to a record 74 points, winning the MLS Supporters’ Shield and ensuring the team’s qualification for the Club World Cup.

“I think there are very important teams in this tournament, from all over the world, and this moves a lot of people everywhere,” Messi said. “We are talking about great teams, with very important players that people love to watch. It is a great opportunity to see the best players play here in the United States. It is a great opportunity to face them and a really enjoyable experience for both the players on the pitch and the fans in the stands.”

Ocean Sentinel Targets Illegal Fishing in Maltese Waters

Ocean Sentinel Targets Illegal Fishing in Maltese Waters

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – The Ocean Sentinel, one of three EU-chartered surveillance vessels, is currently patrolling the central Mediterranean, focusing on illegal fishing activities south of Malta. Operated by the European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA), the vessel is inspecting tuna purse seine and towing vessels during the active fishing season.

Recent enforcement actions targeted third-country vessels, including Turkish and Tunisian boats, found operating without proper authorisation near Malta’s coast. The Fisheries Ministry confirmed that three Turkish vessels were intercepted after entering Malta’s fishing waters illegally. While “necessary steps” were taken, the ministry provided no further details.

Maltese inspectors are working alongside EU officials on board the Ocean Sentinel, which operates within 25 nautical miles south of Malta—a key tuna fishing zone.

Med-Or, an Italy-France Seminar on Security in the Mediterranean

Med-Or, an Italy-France Seminar on Security in the Mediterranean

ROME (ITALPRESS) – On June 12, the Med-Or Italian Foundation, in collaboration with the French Embassy in Rome and the Italian Embassy in France, hosted for the first time a high-level Franco-Italian seminar dedicated to security issues in the Mediterranean, crucial topics for both countries.

This dialogue is part of the implementation of the Quirinal Treaty, signed in November 2021 between France and Italy. The Treaty calls for strengthened bilateral cooperation in the field of security and identifies the Mediterranean as a “shared space of intense interaction, transformation, and challenges” for both France and Italy. It also stipulates that France and Italy should “develop synergies and strengthen their coordination in the Mediterranean, promote a shared European approach to neighborhood policies to the South and East of the European Union, undertake joint initiatives, and contribute to strengthening relations between the European Union and Africa.”

In the presence of the French Ambassador to Italy, Martin Briens, and the Italian Ambassador to France, Emanuela D’Alessandro, representatives from public institutions, think tanks, and the private sector from both France and Italy came together for an in-depth discussion, in line with the strategic priority that both countries place on the broader Mediterranean region. The discussions addressed topics of common interest: strengthening a shared approach, access to energy resources and strategic supply chains, coordination in response to migration challenges, and cooperation in the field of defense. Participants also discussed the current situations in Libya, Lebanon, Gaza, and Syria. The day’s work concluded with remarks by the Italian Minister of Defense, Guido Crosetto.

In order to continue this ongoing framework for dialogue, participants agreed on the opportunity to renew this Mediterranean security meeting on an annual basis, alternating between Paris and Rome. Among the future prospects to be developed is the potential creation of a permanent research structure on Mediterranean security, with the aim of bringing together all relevant stakeholders—institutions, businesses, associations, research institutes, foundations—interested in promoting even closer strategic alignment and achieving a common Franco-Italian vision regarding security challenges in the Mediterranean region.

Malta, investigations intensify after 32 narrowly escape building collapse

Malta, investigations intensify after 32 narrowly escape building collapse

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Authorities have launched a formal investigation following the dramatic collapse of a block of flats in Paceville, the centre of rousing activity in St Julian’s, on Wednesday night, which saw 32 residents narrowly escape serious injury or death. Meanwhile major cracks in a residential building close to the collapsed structure have begun to worry neighbours about another potential incident. Authorities say that 40 more residents have been evacuated.

The Building and Construction Authority (BCA), the Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA), and the police are working to determine the cause of the collapse and whether safety regulations were breached. Two police reports and one with the Building and Constructions Authority were filed before authorities evacuated the building that collapsed mere hours later.

The collapse occurred around 10:30pm on Paceville Road, St Julian’s, triggering an immediate response from emergency services. A timely evacuation, prompted by signs of structural instability, is credited with saving lives.

Central to the investigation is a dispute over the timeline of nearby demolition works. Excel Developments, the company behind the adjacent site, insists all works ceased on May 7. The developers, including Joseph Portelli, Mark Agius, and Daniel Refalo, claim they fully complied with all regulations.

However, video footage released by centrist political party Momentum suggests otherwise. Party leader Arnold Cassola presented evidence showing demolition works were still underway in late May and early June.

Excel has rejected Cassola’s claims as “false, malicious and libelous,” arguing that no adjacent works continued past May 7 and asserting that CCTV footage will support their timeline.

The BCA confirmed that a stop order was issued on June 10 — just one day before the evacuation and two days before the collapse — raising serious questions about Excel’s version of events.

The Chamber of Architects has also launched a disciplinary investigation to assess whether any architects may have acted negligently.

As authorities sift through evidence, public attention is now firmly focused on construction standards, regulatory oversight, and developer accountability in Malta’s rapidly expanding building sector.

Libya, U.S. Delegation to visit Tripoli and Benghazi ahead of Berlin Summit

ROME (ITALPRESS) – A U.S. delegation will visit Libya on June 18, starting its trip in the capital, Tripoli, and then proceeding to the Parliament in Benghazi. This was announced by Ali Takbali, a member of the Libyan Parliament, to the Italpress news agency.

Takbali explained that during the visit, the delegation will discuss the path toward the Berlin Conference, as well as the issue of the dismissal of former Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh. The visit comes at a time when the international community is preparing to hold a high-level meeting in the German capital, Berlin, on June 19, as part of ongoing efforts to overcome the political deadlock in Libya and to support United Nations initiatives for a comprehensive solution.

The Berlin meeting will focus on discussing a new political roadmap aimed at forming a unified government with international backing and local consensus, tasked with overseeing the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections within an estimated period of four to six months. This process could lead to the end of political division and the cessation of the two rival administrations led by Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh and Osama Hamad. These efforts reflect the international community’s desire to stabilize security and peace in Libya, opening a new phase that strengthens national institutions and fulfills the Libyan people’s aspirations for peace and development.
