Malta secures €12.35 m Eu grant for Freeport electrification phase

Malta secures €12.35 m Eu grant for Freeport electrification phase

VALLETTA (MALTA) (MNA/ITALPRESS) – Malta has been awarded €12.35 million in EU funding for the second phase of its onshore power supply (OPS) project at the Malta Freeport. The funds were granted under the European Commission’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Transport Call, following a competitive selection that saw only four projects approved out of 20 EU submissions. Led by the Economy Ministry in partnership with the Malta Freeport Corporation, the initiative will extend high-voltage shore power connections to South Quay Terminal 2 and West Quay Terminal 1. This upgrade will allow docked vessels to shut off their engines and connect to land-based electricity, cutting both emissions and noise. The second phase involves a total investment of €18.4 million, with the EU covering nearly 70% of the cost. This follows the first phase, currently in progress, which is co-funded through the EU’s Just Transition Facility. That phase focuses on supplying shore power to vessels at North Quay Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Together, both phases aim to fully electrify Malta Freeport, a key part of the TEN-T Core Port of Marsaxlokk, aligning with EU transport and environmental objectives. This is Maltàs fourth OPS project, including two others underway at the Grand Harbour in Valletta. The Economy Ministry emphasized the environmental benefits, stating the move will cut greenhouse gas emissions and noise pollution by allowing ships to operate without burning fuel while docked.(ITALPRESS).

Malta to send 250 tonnes of flour to Gaza in new aid shipment

Malta to send 250 tonnes of flour to Gaza in new aid shipment

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Malta will be sending 250 tonnes of flour to Gaza in the coming weeks as part of its ongoing humanitarian aid efforts, the Foreign Ministry announced.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ian Borg visited the Marsa flour mills, where 10,000 sacks of flour are being prepared for shipment. The first consignment is expected to leave Malta Freeport next week, destined for Limassol, Cyprus, before reaching Gaza. The aid will be distributed by the international NGO World Central Kitchen.

The operation is a joint effort involving the Government of Cyprus and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).

Borg emphasized the importance of delivering basic essentials such as flour, which is less likely to face logistical or political barriers. “Hunger must never be a weapon of war,” he said, urging the international community to ensure aid reaches those in need.

Since 2023, Gaza has faced a deepening humanitarian crisis, worsened by disrupted aid flows and ongoing conflict following the October 7 Hamas attacks.

Malta has provided over €1.1 million in humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people over the past five years. Contributions include financial support to UNRWA, UNICEF, and other NGOs, as well as scholarships for Palestinian students at the University of Malta.

With this latest shipment, Malta’s aid to Palestine in 2025 will total approximately €350,000. Borg reiterated Malta’s call for an end to hostilities and the release of hostages, stressing that international cooperation is vital for lasting peace.

BARCELONA (SPAIN) (ITALPRESS) – Marc-André Ter Stegen could leave Barcelona. The German goalkeeper, who will not start after the purchase of Joan García and the renewal of Wojciech Szczesny, has attracted the attention of several clubs.

According to Sport, among these there is Inter, who could formalize an offer in the next few days. The Nerazzurri currently have the Swiss Yann Sommer, 36, between the posts, with another year of contract, but he has received an attractive offer from Galatasaray, and Inter are evaluating it. If Sommer were to leave for Turkey, the main replacement would then become Ter Stegen, who is also liked by Galatasaray, as well as Monaco.

Luis Diaz or Marcus Rashford are Barcelona’s new targets

Luis Diaz or Marcus Rashford are Barcelona’s new targets

BARCELONA (SPAIN) (ITALPRESS) – Nico Williams’ renewal with Athletic Bilbao has shocked Barcelona, who are now called upon to take action to give Flick a winger. According to the Catalan press, at this point the first choice automatically becomes Luis Diaz, the 28-year-old Colombian from Liverpool: both the player and his entourage have made it known that they are ready to do anything to land at Camp Nou but in light of the tragic death of Diogo Jota, Diaz himself has frozen all negotiations for now.

Plan B is called Marcus Rashford, the 27-year-old English striker leaving Manchester United: his valuation is around 45 million euros but it is a price that is destined to drop given that the player is not part of Amorim’s plans, and a new loan after the one at Aston Villa is not even ruled out.

Among other things, Rashford has reportedly expressed his willingness to lower his salary. On hold, however, are the talks regarding Denzel Dumfries: in Spain they confirm that Jorge Mendes has proposed him to the Blaugrana given the 25 million clause valid until July 15 for transfers abroad, but given the delicate financial situation, Barça wants to be sure of being able to register goalkeeper Joan Garcia and a possible attacking winger before going for the Dutchman from Inter: a decision on this matter should be made next week.
