Malta, police probe involving envoy to Libya

Malta, police probe involving envoy to Libya

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Malta’s Foreign Ministry said it is aware of an ongoing police investigation involving the country’s ambassador to Libya, Frank Aquilina, following allegations published by a Libyan journalist.

Geneva-based journalist Khalil Elhassi claimed on X that Aquilina is being investigated over alleged harassment after a complaint by a Libyan employee at the Maltese embassy in Tripoli.

Elhassi alleged that Aquilina was arrested and detained for 48 hours upon arriving in Malta on a private visit before being released. Citing unnamed sources, he said the ambassador was required to report daily to authorities.

The Foreign Ministry said it had not received a complaint regarding the allegations but confirmed it was aware of an ongoing police investigation.

“The matter is still under investigation and no charges have been filed,” the ministry said, adding that it takes allegations of harassment seriously and is monitoring developments closely.

The ministry also confirmed Aquilina was in Malta at the time of publication.

The nature of Aquilina’s relationship with the employee remains unclear, and it is not known whether it was consensual.

Aquilina, appointed ambassador to Libya in September, has previously served in senior diplomatic roles in Palestine, Turkey and Denmark.

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – A United States Department of State aircraft was forced to return to Malta International Airport after declaring an emergency shortly after take-off.

The De Havilland Canada Dash 8-300, registered N563AW and operating under the callsign STATE50, departed Malta at around 7.20am on 5 July.

According to Aviation MT, the aircraft declared an emergency while flying about 30 nautical miles west of Gozo before turning back towards Malta.

The turboprop landed safely at Malta International Airport just minutes later. No injuries were reported.

Images taken after landing showed the aircraft taxiing back to its stand with one engine shut down, indicating that an engine malfunction may have prompted the emergency.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic comments on the Paraguay-France match: “I would have received four red cards”

Zlatan Ibrahimovic comments on the Paraguay-France match: “I would have received four red cards”

ROME (ITALPRESS) – “It was a different kind of challenge for the French team,” said Zlatan Ibrahimovic, after watching the struggle with Les Bleus to break down the Paraguayan defense in the World Cup round of 16. The former Swedish national team striker, a commentator for Fox Sports, said the main challenge was avoiding the trap set by Gustavo Alfaro’s men: “It was mainly about not letting ourselves be provoked, staying calm, not falling into their trap,” admitted AC Milan’s senior advisor.

For much of the match, Paraguay applied constant physical pressure, bordering on unsportsmanlike conduct and, at times, even unfair play. It was an approach Ibrahimovic, he said, he wouldn’t have tolerated as a player: “I would have definitely received four red cards in this match. And maybe a few more… I like playing real matches,” he emphasized. The former AC Milan striker finally focused on Deschamps’s men’s qualification: “France showed calm, they did what they had to do. They responded with a smile, scored a goal, and celebrated: that’s the best way to react.”

Liverpool open to offers for Van Dijk, Amorim’s Milan is interested

Liverpool open to offers for Van Dijk, Amorim’s Milan is interested

LONDON (ENGLAND) (ITALPRESS)From “untouchable” to potentially available on the transfer market. Virgil van Dijk‘s World Cup campaign with the Netherlands ended in the Round of 16 and, according to TEAMtalk, the veteran defender could soon bring his long spell at Liverpool to an end.

The Dutch centre-back, who turns 35 on July 8 and has been with the Reds since 2018, signed a contract extension last year when Arne Slot was in charge. Now, with Andoni Iraola at the helm, Liverpool could be willing to part ways with another senior figure in the Anfield dressing room, having already done so with Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson.

Fueling the speculation is reported interest from several of Europe’s leading clubs, most notably AC Milan, now managed by Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese coach, formerly of Manchester United, is said to be keen on bringing Van Dijk to San Siro, with the club already making initial moves. Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe are also reportedly interested, along with several clubs from the Saudi Pro League and Major League Soccer.

Dalic set to leave as head coach of Croatia, Slaven Bilic frontrunner for the job

Dalic set to leave as head coach of Croatia, Slaven Bilic frontrunner for the job

ZAGREB (CROATIA) (ITALPRESS) – Croatia’s dramatic World Cup elimination, sealed by a goal disallowed by semi-automated offside technology by the narrowest of margins, has proven difficult to accept. The Croatian Football Federation (HNS) appears ready to begin a new cycle by turning to a familiar face.

Former national team head coach Slaven Bilic has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Zlatko Dalic, whose contract is set to expire. With Dalic also attracting several attractive offers from club football, a contract extension now appears unlikely following Croatia’s World Cup exit against Portugal.

According to Sportske Novosti, Bilic is prepared to return to the position he left in 2012. Another name under consideration is former Croatia international Ivica Olic.

The Croatian Football Federation has reportedly been working on Dalic’s successor since before the World Cup and, according to local media, consultations with senior players have produced positive feedback regarding Bilic’s possible return. Olic, meanwhile, could be appointed head coach of Croatia’s Under-21 national team.
