Fabio Borini announces retirement from football

ROME (ITALPRESS) – Fabio Borini has called time on his football career. At the age of 35, the Emilia-born forward has announced his retirement from professional football.
“It all started with a flight,” he wrote in an Instagram post. “When I was 16. A flight spent entirely with tears in my eyes as I began the journey of my career, without a real destination beyond the dreams I wanted to make come true.
“From that day on, I started building myself, not knowing what would become of that strong-minded child. I started building my dreams in my head and ended up turning them into my reality. The same reality that will change forever today. The reality that has shaped my past, present and future.
“Today, just like that day sitting on the plane to London, I feel the same emotions about what lies ahead for me. Fear. Happiness. Courage. Uncertainty. Dreams. Success. Passion. Sacrifice.
“I feel I have to thank that child who never stopped believing. That man who will now continue to believe in the next opportunity, without a ball at his feet, always.
“Thank you, thank you football.”
Borini came through the youth academies of Bologna and then Chelsea. During his career, he also played for Parma, Roma, Liverpool and Milan, among others. Last season, he played for Salford City in England’s League Two, the fourth tier of English football.
He also made one appearance for the Italian senior national team and was part of Italy’s squad for Euro 2012, although he did not take to the pitch.
