Malta, Prime Minister Abela rules out introducing a “mafia crime” offense

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Prime Minister Abela rules out introducing a “mafia crime” offense Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela has ruled out introducing a new criminal offense regarding mafia association into the national legal system, maintaining that Malta “is not a mafia state.”

Speaking in Parliament, Abela stated that the offense—recommended by the public inquiry into the death of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia—would send the wrong message about the country.

“As long as I am Prime Minister, it will never be introduced,” Abela declared during a heated exchange with Opposition leader Alex Borg. The latter accused the government of failing to implement key recommendations from the inquiry commission, arguing that this undermines efforts to strengthen trust in Maltese institutions.
