Malta, Government pledges regeneration after storm damage

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – The government will roll out financial assistance for families and businesses hit by this week’s severe storm and launch regeneration projects in affected areas, Prime Minister Robert Abela confirmed.
Speaking after chairing a coordination meeting at Castille, Abela said the response is focused on three priorities: removing immediate dangers, ensuring no one is left without support, and repairing damage while regenerating damaged localities.
He said Malta’s strong economic position allows the state to help those who incurred significant costs, including households and business owners. Existing schemes such as Microinvest and the Business Development Scheme will be used to support enterprises, while additional aid is being considered for farmers, livestock breeders and fishermen.
Abela also said the National Social and Development Fund will finance necessary works and assistance measures linked to storm damage. He thanked public sector workers and disciplined forces for their efforts, noting that no deaths or serious injuries were reported.
Restoration and regeneration works are expected to begin in the coming months, particularly in coastal areas.
Chief Permanent Secretary Tony Sultana said departments are assessing the extent of the damage, while the public can request assistance through the government helpline or email service. Colonel Mark Mallia, head of the OPM Secretariat, said implementation plans are being prepared to ensure affected communities receive both financial aid and long-term regeneration.
