Malta, man jailed for 10 years in first online terror recruitment case

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Malta has handed down its first conviction for online terrorism recruitment, sentencing a 33-year-old man to ten years in prison for spreading extremist propaganda and attempting to radicalise people across Europe.

Mouhamadou Dosso, an Ivorian national with Italian residency, pleaded guilty to terrorism offences after police traced radical Islamist content and communications to his social media accounts.

The investigation began in April 2024 when a Facebook profile sharing extremist material was flagged to authorities. After weeks of surveillance, police identified Dosso as the person behind the account.

A raid on his Ħamrun residence on 31 October 2024 led to the seizure of five mobile phones. Forensic analysis revealed messages encouraging individuals across Europe to “join the jihad” and carry out attacks.

Inspector Mohammed Shurrab, who led the investigation, said Dosso targeted vulnerable individuals, including asylum seekers, promising them paradise if they died in suicide missions.

Police also uncovered ISIS propaganda videos, photos of explosives, and anti-Western imagery.

Dosso admitted to the charges in July 2025. The Criminal Court accepted a joint submission by prosecutors and defence recommending a ten-year jail term.

In sentencing, the court described the offences as “serious and disturbing,” ordering the confiscation of Dosso’s devices and the removal of related content online. He was also ordered to pay €9,631.16 in court expenses within a year.
